College Teaching and Advising Award Winners

The College presents $1000 to the outstanding teacher and $500 to the outstanding advisor in our department once yearly.  Nominations are by the department chair on consultation with the Awards Chair.

    Professor of the Year

    The Professor Of The Year Award is the sole initiative of students in food science and technology.  This award is meant to honor a professor picked by the students for their outstanding teaching, leadership, service, and extracurricular involvement.

    OUTSTANDING TEACHING ASSISTANT AWARD

    Past winners are:

    Yoon-Hee Lee (2008); Robert King (2007); Casey Philbin (2006); Stefano Tiziani (2005); Mary Kay Folk (2004).

    Objectives:

    To motivate and encourage graduate students to contribute to our excellent teaching program.

    To provide graduate students with teaching experience and the advantages of award recognition for obtaining academic faculty positions after their graduate study.

    Selection Criteria:

    The teaching assistants should be nominated and evaluated by students for the award. There will be two categories of recognition: the Departmental Teaching Award with an individual plaque, name on the Departmental Award Display Plaque, and cash award of $500 and the Teaching Award of Merit. The Departmental Teaching Award will be given to TA(s) with 80% of the students rating them in the top 25% and 70% of the students voting “yes” to the candidate who deserves the award. The Teaching Award of Merit will be given to all students with 70% of the students rating them in the top 25%, and 60% of the students voting "yes" to the candidate who deserves the award.

    Evaluation Sheet:

    (1) Ranks among TAs at the University: Top 5%, Top 25% Top 50% Below 50%

    (2) Should the nominee receive award? Yes   No

    A student can receive a maximum of two teaching awards during their entire graduate study.

    Nominations should be submitted to the Chair, Graduate Student Teaching Award Committee. The Chair should solicit nominations by posted memo and e-mail by the second and seventh week of the quarter.

    The Department Chair and Chair of the Graduate Student Teaching Award Committee will present the award to the winner in his/her classroom the tenth week of the quarter.

    Evaluation:

    The student evaluation forms will be administrated and tabulated by a staff member. The staff member should keep records for the next one-quarter. Copies of the evaluation results will be sent to the teaching assistants to assist them in maintaining their strengths and improve their weaknesses.


    OUTSTANDING GRA RESEARCH AWARD

    Objective:

    To motivate and encourage graduate students to publish high quality research in a timely manner.

    Selection Criteria:

    M.S. candidate: 2 1/2 years after starting M.S. program -- 2 publications: One paper should be accepted for publication and 1 should be submitted for publication with the approval of 2 professors for the quality.

    Ph.D. candidate: 4 years after starting Ph.D. program -- 3 publications: Two papers are accepted for publication and one is submitted for publication with the approval of 2 professors for the quality.

    Journal criteria:

    Major journals in food science and its related areas. The Research Award Committee will decide the appropriateness for approval, if disputed.

    Paper criteria:

    Original research or review papers in peer reviewed journals

    Awards: Individual Plaque, $500 Cash Award, and name engraved on the Departmental Award Display Plaque
